How can you remind listeners of valuable older podcast episodes?

Here are 3 of my favorite ways:
1. republish them
2. mention them in your most recent episode
3. use a newsletter to repurpose older episodes

In fact, #3 is where I got this spike in Geopats after a newsletter mention recently  (the yellow area in the screenshot below).

Let me explain how to do these things simply.
1. do not delete older ones but republish them.
People do this all the time. Add a word like "replay" or "rebroadcast" to the episode title to let listeners know that its an older episode. Long term listeners will know that they may have already listened to the episode. This is time respect and goes a long way with loyal long term listeners. Newer listeners will appreciate sharing evergreen content that they may have missed. Even more so if you connect it to the content in recent episodes. They will appreciate your curation and focus. I know I do when the podcasts I listen to do this.

2. use a newsletter to repurpose older episodes.
When you announce a new episode in the newsletter, connect it to an older one. Or have a flashback episode section for older episodes. You do NOT need to go into long detail about the contents of the older episode, just a few keywords and a link will do. Hint, lead but don't reveal all.

True/False: You have to like writing to create an effective newsletter?
FALSE!

Examples of short, simple newsletter examples.
  • This issue of Podcast To Connect (podcast support newsletter)
  • This issue of Global Podcast Editors (YouTube channel support newsletter)

And here's more help on how I write brief newsletters with high open rates and click rates that recycle my content AND provide a communication path for my listeners.

3. mention them in your most recent episode:

There are so many ways to do this. I like to highlight non-social media methods because I think, ironically, that people are tiring of those platforms.

Here are a few:
  • I know do know some podcasters that have a list of their episodes up while they're recording so if something feels like it connects, they can instantly mention the episode and episode number. That's a level of organization that I don't expect everyone to have.
  • Because I wear all the hats for my own podcast, I remember details from them keenly. So I personally tend to mention names of past guests when it connects organically AND THEN I link to the exact episode in the show notes.
  • Another way to do this is to record the episode name and number after the recording and insert it into the episode later. I'm not sure this is worth the extra recording time AND more so, it's hard to get match voice tone and energy after a recording. So often these insertions stick out, and not in good ways. So I don't recommend this route unless you're a voice over talent and can match your voice very closely.
  • Mention the older episode in the intro. Again, only if it connects to the current episode. Briefly explain the connection. "This conversation with Sowmya reminds me of a conversation I had with Nicole last year about moving abroad. They had similar language struggles but very different ways of overcoming them. I'll link Nicole's episode in the show notes."

How else do YOU repurpose your valuable older episodes? Please comment below. We'd love to know!

However you do it, I'm glad you're thinking about repurposing valuable older content.

A Gold IRA is a retirement account that lets you invest in physical gold and other precious metals, helping protect your savings from inflation and market instability. It works like a traditional IRA but with gold as an asset.
